Book of the Month

Heloise & Abelard: A New Biography
Otherwise know as 'what I'm reading on the subway'.

My brother, who is the most knowledgeable bibliophile I know turned me on to this book. Since then I've been consuming all that I can relating to Heloise & Abelard including Abelard's quasi-autobiography Historia Calamitatum (The Story of My Misfortunes) simply because I find it an incredible, captivating story. A story for the ages.

Heloise & Abelard: A New Biography
by James Burge

From the Publisher

The heart-rending love story of Abelard and Heloise was one of the most talked about relationships in the Middle Ages, and is one of the greatest love stories of all time. Peter Abelard was arguably the greatest poet, philosopher, and religious teacher in all of twelfth-century Europe. In an age when women were rarely educated, Heloise was his most gifted young student. As master of the cathedral school at Notre Dame in Paris, Abelard was expected to be celibate; his career would be destroyed by marrying. In spite of this, Abelard and Heloise's private tutoring sessions inevitably turned to passionate romance, and their moments apart were spent writing love letters.

When Heloise became pregnant, her possessive guardian and uncle, Fulbert, angrily insisted that they marry. The ceremony was held in secret, but the rumor spread through Paris. Enemies confronted Heloise, who publicly denied the marriage in order to protect Abelard's career. Fearing for her safety, Abelard slipped Heloise out of the city and sent her to a convent. Robbed of his niece and his family's honor, Fulbert took revenge by having Abelard brutally castrated. Abelard retreated to a monastery, and the famous lovers now lived separate lives behind cloistered walls -- but their love, and their letters, continued.

For a long time, the only letters known to have survived dated from the later period of their separation. Then, astoundingly, a few years ago a young scholar identified 113 new letters between the pair. Lost for almost nine hundred years, these fresh missives provide an intriguing snapshot of the couple's clandestine passion that is erotic, poignant, and at times even funny.

James Burge is the first biographer to combine these astonishing new discoveries with the latest scholarship, resulting in a more complete biography; one that paints a fuller picture of Heloise as a woman who tested the cultural constraints of her time. Burge also addresses Abelard's theological disputes with other teachers, including Bernard of Clairvaux, which led to Abelard's eventual trial for heresy. But Heloise & Abelard is much more than a biography. It opens a window onto the enormous and exciting changes that took place in medieval Europe, even as it presents us with the richest telling yet of one of history's greatest love stories.

These are two of my favourite things...

Cape MantelleCloudy Bay
Wired has a great article on how two of my favourite things; technology and wine are melding together and changing centuries of wine making. It's a case of Old World(France, Spain, Portugal) wines vs. New World (Australia, Chile, Ontario, California) wines. My taste tends to span between the two with a global palate.

I'll get to show my love for New World wines when I visit New Zealand & Australia in November. I'll be hitting the Marlborough region of New Zealand's south island which will probably involve me swimming in the Cloud Bay Sauvignon Blanc tanks. In Australia, I'll be fear and loathing in Margaret River, Western Australia's (WA) wine region located just south of beautiful Perth.

More trip details to come in the coming months....

More O.C. Goodness

Dear God! that was a fun O.C. episode last night! From Marisa and Alex kissing (and not those dumb cheek kisses like last week)although I still think Marisa doesn't know how to kiss, to the look on Julies face when Marisa told her Alex was her "girlfriend not a girl who is a friend". THE BEST though was Seth returning to his old form. The whole Spiderman bit and his grand romantic gestures was pure Seth Cohen!! Seth really should be the next Spidey. Props to Josh Schwartz for playing the very non-indie Boyz to Men. One of my fav blogs, My Old Kentucky Blog has a nice little review on the debauchery and some damn fine music.

A Scanner Darkly
This looks so good! Filmed in the same animated style as Waking Life, A Scanner Darkly is another Philip K. Dick story starring Keanu Reeves, Winona Ryder, Robert Downey Jr. and Woody Harrelson. Richard Linklater is once again directing.

Freud not so crazy afterall.

"America is a mistake, a giant mistake."

Sigmund Freud (1856 - 1939)

You want proof? American's Are Dumb.

That's (not so) Hot!

House of WaxI first read about this on engadget. Since then, the blogshpere has been going nuts now that it has been revealed that Paris Hilton's T-Mobile Sidekick was hacked. Personal pics, notes and REAL telephone numbers of some of Hollywood's glitterati (and wannabe glitterati) have been splashed all over the internet. Prank calls were quickly placed to those on the list and posted to the web. Now the Drudge Report is reporting that it is being investigated by the Feds. One site was even contacted by the Secret Service. I really wish people would just leave Paris alone so she can settle down and have my babies.

On a brighter note...One of my favourite blogs, poptart run by the lovely Valerie has a link to Paris Hilton's new movie House of Wax. It also stars the very hot Elisha Cuthbert of 24 and Popular Mechanics for Kids fame. Paris, Elisha and a whole lotta wax...now that's hot!

Ole!!

Emily HainesSo I'm flipping through my copy of TORO that I received with my copy of Canada's best newspaper,
The Globe & Mail
and I'm reading the Letters to the Editor (as I often do) and Holy Chrysler! There's my name in black & white. Last month I quickly sent off a one sentence letter to the magazine to tell them how funny their back page feature, TORO 24 was and then thought nothing of it. My email read:

"I just read the TORO Two-Four and nearly peed my pants.
Duarte Da Silva, Toronto" (it's true. I nearly did)

They also chose to feature the quote by having it printed in large letters as the page highlight. Had I know that it was going to get printed in a national men's magazine I...umm... might have been a little more..umm...eloquent.

It gets better though. A few pages later the have a stunning picture of the lovely Ms. Emily Haines of Metric as this months TORO Woman who is apply described as "every indie boy’s dream" So true. So very true.

For the love of the English word

From The Toronto Star

Bozone (n.): The substance surrounding stupid people that stops bright ideas from penetrating. The bozone layer, unfortunately, shows little sign of breaking down any time soon.

Cashtration (n.): The act of buying a house, which renders the subject financially impotent for an indefinite period.

Sarchasm (n): The gulf between the author of sarcastic wit and the person who doesn't get it.

Inoculatte
(v): To take coffee intravenously when you are running late.

Osteopornosis (n): A degenerate disease. (This one got extra credit.)

Karmageddon (n): It's like, when everybody is sending off all these really bad vibes, right? And then, like, the Earth explodes and it's like, a serious bummer.

Decafalon (n.): The gruelling event of getting through the day consuming only things that are good for you.

Glibido (v): All talk, no action.

Dopeler effect (n): The tendency of stupid ideas to seem smarter when they come at you rapidly.

Caterpallor (n.): The colour you turn after finding half a grub in the fruit you're eating.

And the pick of the literature:

Ignoranus (n): A person who's both stupid and an asshole.

The Last Supper

The Last Supper

A new ad campaign for designer's Marithé and François Gribaud that was inspired by Dan Brown's The Da Vinci Code has caused quite a stir in Milan.

I don't think I would have minded eating at that table.

Friday Night Libation

Kòrae Corvina Veronese 2002
Pasqua Kòrae Corvina Rosso Veronese 2002
Corvina is one of the principal grapes of Valpolicella and Amarone. It's an intense ruby red with good tannins and loaded with fruit. Think black cherries and plums with a slight peppery finish and good acidity.

Philosophy In the Morgue

The Arcades Project
My ever so cheerful brother Phil has just launched his own blog, Philosophy In the Morgue. If you knew him you'd understand just how perfect that title is for him. Phil describes the blog or "The Project" (as he likes to call it) "In the spirit of Walter Benjamin's 'The Arcades Project' this blog will mostly consist of quotations and excerpts from books that I'm currently reading or have read. Topics will range from life and death, philosophy, history, boredom, melancholy and everything in between."
Sounds like it's going to be a real hoot!

American Dad

American Dad
I'll be skipping Super Bowl XXXXXXXXXX but I'll be tuning in to American Dad the latest 'toon from Seth MacFarlane, the creator of the most excellent Family Guy.
