Does 'quality of life' mean anything?

There's been way too much written and spoken about the Schiavo case. This shouldn't be the case. This is a deeply personal decision that should not be dragged through the courts and debated in the U.S. House of Representatives and Senate. I wonder if this would be happening if Schiavo was of a different colour? Dan's got a post with a couple of great links as does Majikthise that hash out the issue.
