Rest in peace.

Terri Schiavo passed away today.

I'd be lying if I didn't say that I got a little choked up when I read the news. I'm just really glad it's over.

Sin City

"cannibalism, castration, decapitation, dismemberment, electrocution, hanging, massacres, pedophilia, slashings and lots and lots of torture."...Sounds good to me!!!!

The Nameless Dread.

Take equal parts Family Circus and H.P. Lovecraft and blend with various hallucinogens and you get this. Not to be confused with the infamous Dysfunctional Family Circus way back in 2001.

Why Pamper Life’s Complexities

The most important philosophical issue of our time will be discussed by leading scholars, philosphers and academics from around the world next week in Manchester at the Manchester Metropolitan University on April 8th & 9th.

My friend Simon would love this. At least he would have when he thought he was Morrissey (seriously)!

Thank god there are still some sane judges in the States.

Bush hasn't made any comments on the issue since losing two consecutive appeals in federal court and most public opinon polls heavily disagreeing with his governments actions. But then again Bush has never really cared for the law, the constitution or the people of the United States.

Does 'quality of life' mean anything?

There's been way too much written and spoken about the Schiavo case. This shouldn't be the case. This is a deeply personal decision that should not be dragged through the courts and debated in the U.S. House of Representatives and Senate. I wonder if this would be happening if Schiavo was of a different colour? Dan's got a post with a couple of great links as does Majikthise that hash out the issue.

I didn't think Bush could piss me off anymore than he already but he always seems come up with something the rat bastard.

Pritzker Prize

Architect Thom Mayne has won the Pritzker Prize, considered the Nobel Prize of architecture. Torontonians might not know his name but certainly know his building. Mayne and his firm Morphosis is responsible for University of Toronto's controversial "Grad House". Previous winners include I.M. Pei (CIBC Tower), Frank Gehry (Transformation AGO), Renzo Piano (Toronto Lighthouse Theatre), Rem Koolhaas (Seattle Public Library), Joern Utzon (Sydney Opera House) and last years's winner Zaha Harid (Contemporary Arts Center); the first woman to win the award. The NY Times has the story.

On a related note, Toronto's Architecture & Urban Design Awards 2005 will be announced on May 16.

Mondovino

MondovinoIt's been quite the year for wine in film. Everyone is of course well aware of the critical sccess of Sideways and the impact it's had on California's wine country. Well, now comes Mondovino. A documentary on the global wine industry. MSNBC has a review calling it "‘Fahrenheit 9/11’ for the grape" which I think is a very apt description considering the buzz and controversy it's been causing in the wine world. I saw Mondovino at last years Toronto International Film Festival and loved it. Jonathan Nossiter is a trained sommelier who in Mondovino looks at wine from a global perspective. Like many other industrys, globalization is having a profound effect on the wine world and Nossiter goes to great lengths to illustrate its impact. The romantic notion of small independent wine makers is quickly evaporating.

Nossiter in his Q&A after the Toronto screening discussed how Mondovino was edited down from over 500 hours of footage to 135 minutes. The original Cannes screening was incomplete and a half hour longer as it was rushed in order to get it screened at the Cannes Film Festival. Nossiter will be using the additional footage for a ten-part, ten hour series of the film on DVD later this year. I look forward to sitting down with a good bottle of wine or two (it is 10 hours afterall!) and taking in more Mondovino.

From bad to worse

Really! Is anyone surprised by this?

Thanks Bushie!!

Mommy. What's a blog?

Gallup has the digits on blogging in America and dispite all the media attention they've received its still a niche segment.

They start off with this great quote from Ben Franklin:

"If you would not be forgotten, as soon as you are dead and rotten, either write things worth reading, or do things worth the writing."

I do neither!

insert witty pee reference here

O.k., I'll be the first to admit that I may spend just a little too much time in front of computers. But let me tell you; if it ever comes to the point where I'm using this thing because I'm too damn lazy to walk across the hall and take a piss...God help me!! Internet Urinal

"With the Internet Urinal, you'll never have to leave your computer again," touts a promo on ThinkGeek. "Imagine the freedom--destroy your opponents in that all-important 'Quake 3' clan match without taking a break; drink as many cans of BAWLS as you want and still be able to make that last important trade before the market closes."

My co-workers would not be amused!

1947 GE Washer #002239Remember those old washing machines your Grandma use to use? The ones you had to ring your clothes through? Well, I've been feeling like that the last few days which is why Modern Laundry hasnt seen any posts over the last week. But I'm (slightly) better now so lets return to some posts shall we?
